About
I have been fortunate to serve in various leadership roles throughout my career, starting from my early days in education to my recent positions in government and international organizations. My journey began with student leadership positions during my school years, which laid the foundation for my future endeavors. In the realm of academic leadership, I served as the Rector of Universitas Paramadina from 2007 to 2014. This experience provided valuable insights into academic administration and institutional management. My government service includes roles as Minister of Education and Culture from 2014 to 2016 and Governor of Jakarta from 2017 to 2022. During my tenure as Governor, I was honored to be elected Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Provincial Governments. In the international arena, I had the privilege of serving as Vice Chairman of the C-40 Steering Committee, alongside the Mayor of London and the Governor of Tokyo. Throughout my career, I've been involved in several community-oriented initiatives, including Gerakan Indonesia Mengajar (2009), Gerakan Indonesia Menyala (2012), Gerakan Kelas Inspirasi (2012), and Gerakan Turun Tangan (2013). These efforts aimed to address various social and educational challenges in Indonesia. I am grateful for the recognition received from various institutions. I was named one of the 100 Global Public Intellectuals by Foreign Policy magazine in 2008 and listed among the 20 Future Leaders of the World by Foresight magazine in 2009. In 2010, I was included in the 500 Most Influential Muslims by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center. More recently, I was recognized as one of the "21 Heroes 2021" by Germany's Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative. My academic background includes a PhD in Public Policy from Northern Illinois University, a Master's degree from the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Universitas Gadjah Mada. In 2023, I was appointed to the board of the Asia Research Center at the University of Oxford, an opportunity for which I am deeply appreciative. Throughout my career, I have strived to promote good governance, democracy, and anti-corruption measures. My commitment to these principles has guided my work in various roles, including as Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Corruption Eradication Commission in 2012. I remain dedicated to serving the community and continuing to contribute to Indonesia's development in whatever capacity I can.
