About

Don Norman is now busily engaged in his 5th retirement., busy helping run his charity, the Don Norman Design Award and Summit (@DNDA). The goal of DNDA is to promote Humanity-Centered Design (HCD+) among early career professionals, educational groups, and the world. See https://dnda.design. Don was the founding Director of The Design Lab at the University of California, San Diego, is co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, retired but an active board member, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and former VP of Apple. His latest work expands the notion of being human centered to consider the impact upon the environment, upon all cultures, and upon quality of life: Humanity centered. This is explained in his latest book "Design for a Better world: Meaningful, sustainable, humanity centered." https://jnd.org/books/design-for-a-better-world/ -- On LinkedIn: @DDNDA Don Norman Design Award Website https://dnda.design Personal website: https:jnd.org Chapters from his books are available at https://jnd.org/books/ * Design for a better world: meaningful, sustainable, humanity centered. (2023) * Design of Everyday Things (revised and expanded edition (2013). His most popular introduction to design. * Invisible Computer: The business side. Importance of infrastructure. Why it can take decades for new products to gain a foothold. If you want human-centered design, you may have to reorganize your company. * Emotional Design: The three kinds of design: Visceral Design emphasizes appearance. Behavioral design emphasizes function, understandability, and the sheer joy of handling, touching, hearing, and using a product. Reflective design is about pride of ownership, about image, and the role of brands. * The Design of Future Things. The role of automation in the home and automobile. Full automation can be wonderful. Partial automation can be annoying, bothersome, and potentially dangerous. * Living with Complexity Complexity is both necessary and good. It is wrong to champion simplicity: people need the power of complexity. Complexity is in the world: simplicity is in the mind. Complex things are simple if they are understandable. It is the role of the designer to make complex things understandable. TO CONTACT DON NORMAN: The only social network that he reads is LinkedIn, where he enjoys the professional and supportive spirit of the discussions. He neither accepts nor gives recommendations. Instructions on how to contact him are at https://jnd.org/about-don-norman/latest-updates/
